If you’re in the market for a new kayak, a blow up kayak can seem like an odd choice. Aren’t they just toys?
They used to be. But in recent years, plastic technology has come a long way, allowing manufacturers to create tough inflatable kayaks that can handle oceans and even rapids. In our search for the best inflatable kayak, we’ve come up with a list of 20 that are good enough to be worth a serious look.
Because not everybody has the same needs, we’ve looked at several varieties of kayak, from comfortable, dry sit inside kayaks to stable, spacious sit on top kayaks. We’ve chosen a selection of one, two, and even three person kayaks so you can paddle alone or with friends. And, of course, we’ve considered a broad price range, from beginner models to top-of-the-line pro-grade rigs.
So, are you ready to find the perfect kayak for your needs?
Let’s get started!

- Weighs 23 pounds
- Weight capacity of 300 pounds
- Rated for class II rivers
- Inflates in 9 minutes
- Includes a collapsible 84” paddle, hand pump, and travel bag
We chose the Driftsun Almanor 110 as our first because we consider it a good baseline of what you should look for in a solo inflatable kayak. To begin with, the weight capacity is 300 pounds, which is enough for most people to bring some gear along for the ride. And there are also bungee webs at the prow and stern, so you actually have somewhere to stow that gear.
This kayak is rated for class II rivers, which basically means a medium current with no white water. At this rating, the Almanor 110 can also handle light, mild chop on a lake, but isn’t suitable for taking out on the ocean. It comes with a complete kit: a paddle, a hand pump, and a travel bag, so you won’t need to make any extra purchases just to get started.
Pros
- Comfortable
- Great straight-line stability
- Plenty of storage
Cons
- A little pricey
This kayak has bungee webbing on the prow and stern for tying down supplies.

Features
- 【Durable PVC Material】With 18-gauge PVC, this kayak is durable enough to get you to your favorite out-of-the-way paddling destination. Heavy-duty PVC provides durable protection from punctures, and screw safety valve is guaranteed not to leak.
- 【Quick Inflation and Deflation】This Goplus kayak can be inflated to a full size (108'×30''×16'') in less than 5 minutes with the included deluxe high flow double action hand pump. Go from garage, to trunk, to water in no time. Quick inflating or deflating is a breeze with a screw safety valve.
- 【Comfortable for Anyone 】Comes with an adjustable inflatable seat for you to sit with ease, and there's also backrest for you to lean on, a footrest with which you can freely step on, and the cockpit is spacious enough for you to move back and forth when paddling, the net bag can be used for storing your items.
- 【Compact and Maneuverable Design】When deflated for transport this inflatable kayak measures much smaller, and can fit nicely into a carry bag. It’s lightweight design makes it easy to handle by one person, weighing in at only 18 lbs.
- 【What's Included in the Package】Whole package includes a 1-person kayak, one stretchable aluminum alloy tri-folding paddle, and a hand pump for you to inflate the kayak, and one repair kit for you to repair the kayak in case of leakage caused by little hole or puncture.
The Goplus Inflatable Kayak is a light-duty kayak for relaxation.
Key Features
- 1 person capacity
- Sit on top design
- Measures 108” long x 30” wide
- Weighs 18 pounds
- Weight capacity of 176 pounds
- Rated for class I rivers
- Inflates in 5 minutes
- Includes collapsible paddle, hand pump, and repair kit
The Goplus Inflatable Kayak is a throwback to less sturdy, old-school inflatable kayaks, but we included it on our list because it’s a solid budget option. While it’s not capable of handling any kind of rapids, this is because the bottom is easy to puncture on a rock, not because of any stability issues. You can take this rig out on a lake with no problems.
The Goplus weighs only 18 pounds, so it’s easy to transport, and bungee webbing on the prow provides space for storage. Unfortunately, the total weight capacity is only 176 pounds, so only smaller individuals will be able to actually bring anything on board.
Pros
- Lightweight
- Plenty of storage
- Inexpensive
Cons
- Only suitable for slow-moving rivers and smooth lakes
- Low weight capacity
This inflatable sit on top kayak is a great choice for the budget-conscious paddler.

Sevylor Quikpak K5

- Easy-to-carry backpack system turns into the seat
- 24-gauge PVC construction is rugged for lake use
- Tarpaulin bottom and polyester cover provide durable protection from punctures
- Multiple air chambers allow another chamber to stay inflated if one is punctured
The Sevylor Quikpak K5’s sit inside design keeps your legs dry while you’re out on the water.
Key Features
- 1 person capacity
- Sit inside design
- Measures 120” long x 34” wide
- Weighs 33 pounds
- Weight capacity of 250 pounds
- Rated for class II rivers
- Inflates in 5 minutes
- Includes collapsible paddle, hand pump, and carrying case
The Sevylor Quikpak K5 is the first sit inside kayak on our list. This means that instead of your legs being exposed, they’re protected under a cover. This keeps them protected from spray, and is a particularly nice feature if you’re kayaking in cold weather.
This is a heavier duty kayak than either of the last two, with a thick, tarpaulin bottom that’s difficult to tear or puncture. But in this case, “heavy duty” also means heavy; the Quikpak tips the scales at a hefty 33 pounds. That said, with proper care, it will last for years without any leaking. It comes in a complete kit, with a paddle, hand pump, and a backpack-style carrying case.
Pros
- Good splash protection
- Plenty of storage space
- Tough tarpaulin bottom
Cons
- Heavy
This kayak is a great choice if you’re looking primarily for durability.

The Outdoor Tuff Stinger 3 inflates in about 3 minutes, so you won’t need to wait long before you get in the water.
Key Features
- 1 person capacity
- Sit on top design
- Measures 109” long x 30” wide
- Weighs 25 pounds
- Weight capacity of 275 pounds
- Rated for class II rivers
- Inflates in 3 minutes
- Includes collapsible 87” paddle, foot pump, and carrying case
The Outdoor Tuff Stinger 3 is a complete kayak kit that’s designed to get you on the water quickly and conveniently. It comes with a paddle, a foot pump, and a backpack-style carrying case. We really liked this foot pump; it fills the Stinger 3 much faster than you’d see from a hand pump.
That said, you’re not getting a very robust kayak. It’s flimsily constructed, with a thin shell that’s relatively easy to puncture if it’s dragged across a rock. The seat is also uncomfortable, with straps that can easily cut into you’re back if they’re not adjusted perfectly. Then again, you’re getting an affordable kayak with plenty of room for your equipment.
Pros
- Inflates quickly
- Plenty of storage space
- Affordable
Cons
- Flimsy construction
- Uncomfortable seat
This affordable kayak offers a lot of storage space for its size.

- PreAssembled at the factory. Simply unfold, inflate and attach the seat
- High support, adjustable padded seat provides comfort for hours of paddling

The Advanced Elements AdvancedFrame is an inflatable ocean kayak with an aluminum-reinforced bow and stern.
Key Features
- 1 person capacity
- Sit inside design
- Measures 125” long x 32” wide
- Weighs 36 pounds
- Weight capacity of 300 pounds
- Rated for whitewater rapids and ocean kayaking
- Includes carrying case and repair kit
- Aluminum bow and stern frames for rigidity
The Advanced Elements AdvancedFrame is a streamlined, robust inflatable kayak with an aluminum-reinforced bow and stern. On the one hand, this gives the AdvancedFrame a sharper profile than most inflatables, so it can move almost as fast as a rigid kayak. On the other hand, it adds a significant amount of weight; it weighs 36 pounds.
Not that weight will be a concern once you’re on the water. The AdvancedFrame has a capacity of up to 300 pounds, so you can lash a cooler to the prow without the risk of capsizing. This kayak comes as a standalone unit and is a little more costly than most solo inflatable kayaks. But it’s a beautiful piece of engineering.
Pros
- Rugged design
- Faster than most inflatables
- Plenty of storage space
- Tough enough for rapids and ocean use
Cons
- Heavy
- Does not include paddles or a pump
- A little pricey
This inflatable kayak is sturdy enough to tackle whitewater rapids and even calm oceans.

The Advanced Elements Lagoon 1’s teardrop shape makes it easy to turn quickly.
Key Features
- 1 person capacity
- Sit inside design
- Measures 100” long x 34” wide
- Weighs 23 pounds
- Weight capacity of 250 pounds
- Rated for class II rivers
- Inflates in 10 minutes
The Advanced Elements Lagoon 1 is an oddly-shaped sit inside inflatable kayak that’s designed specifically for maneuverability. It has a wide, teardrop-shaped body that pivots on a dime, although your top speed will obviously be a bit limited. You’ll have plenty of splash protection to stay dry, even in moderately choppy water.
This is a standalone kayak, but there’s plenty to recommend it. For one, it can handle a variety of water conditions, including lakes, medium-speed rivers, and it’s even marine rated so you can take it out in calm saltwater. The large prow features a bungee web for securing supplies and an adequate weight capacity of 250 pounds.
Pros
- Marine rated for calm bays and harbors
- Nimble and easy to maneuver
- Good splash protection
- Plenty of storage space
Cons
- Does not include paddle or pump
If you’re looking for a light-duty ocean kayak, this is an ideal choice.

Features
- 5-minute setup lets you spend more time on the water
- Easy-to-carry backpack system turns into the seat
- 21-gauge PVC construction is rugged for lake use
- Tarpaulin bottom provides durable protection from punctures
- Multiple air chambers allow another chamber to stay inflated if one is punctured
The Sevylor Quikpak K1 is built for comfort and relaxation, not for tackling raging rapids.
Key Features
- 1 person capacity
- Sit on top design
- Measures 103” long x 36” wide
- Weighs 21 pounds
- Weight capacity of 400 pounds
- Rated for class I rivers
- Inflates in 5 minutes
- Includes collapsible paddle, hand pump, and carrying case
- Features a built-in cup holder
Most “sit on top” inflatable kayaks are actually hybrids, with wide, tall sides that are more like a canoe than a kayak. The Sevylor Quikpak K1 is the exception to this rule. It has the same, true sit on top design you’ll see on a lot of polymer kayaks, right down to the scalloped foot rests.
This design is made primarily for comfort, and the Quikpak goes the full distance, even building a cup holder into the body. However, there’s no splash protection, so prepare to get a little bit wet. Without any sides, this kayak drains easily. No need to worry about becoming waterlogged.
At 21 pounds, the Quikpak is relatively light. It also has a unique carrying case, which collapses down to double as the seat. That’s a clever way to save weight!
Pros
- High weight capacity
- Tough tarpaulin bottom
- Affordable
Cons
- Only suitable for slow-moving rivers and smooth lakes
This sit on top inflatable kayak is easier than most to get on and off.

- Weight capacity of 275 pounds

The PackRaft is relatively short and wide, so it’s made for maneuverability, not speed. It’s made primarily as a “just in case” option, with a small carrying case that includes a repair kit. The Challenger provides enough splash protection to keep your legs from winding up in a puddle and features a large storage platform on the prow, complete with nylon webbing. Be careful of weight, though; this kayak only supports 220 pounds.

Bottom Line
We’ve covered a lot of ground here. But why would you buy an air kayak over a traditional, rigid kayak? There are a few reasons:
- Stability. Inflatable kayaks tend to be wider than rigid kayaks, so they’re harder to capsize. This comes at the expense of some speed.
- Portability. When you have to take a portage trail with a rigid kayak, it’s a headache. And don’t even think about casually strapping one on your back for a daylong hiking excursion. On the other hand, you can carry an inflatable kayak just about anywhere. And if you have to get out of the water and carry your boat, it’s easy.
- Price. Yes, some beginner rigid kayaks cost less than high-end inflatables. But if you’re looking at comparable models, the inflatable will be cheaper.
We hope our inflatable kayak reviews helped you find exactly what you need to make your next outing a success.
