Hunting is a lot more than just pointing your gun at some game and pulling the trigger. It’s a day-long or weekend-long experience. So you need to carry a lot more than just a gun and a skinning knife. You need water, snacks, and emergency supplies like a flashlight and a first aid kit. And you still need to have enough capacity to pack out some meat.
We decided to search for the best hunting backpack available, and ended up with 15 top choices.
We looked for hunters backpacks with good capacity, plenty of pockets, and a comfortable fit. Along the way, we found a lot of different features, including bags with gun holsters, MOLLE webbing, and even a sweet bowhunting pack with a special bow caddy. And, of course, we’re always looking for a good bargain.
So let’s find out what the best hunting packs have to offer. Here we go!

- 5,250 cubic inch main compartment

- Available in olive or tan
- External rifle pocket
- Drop down shelf for packing out meat
The ALPS OutdoorZ Commander is a large, external frame backpack with a cavernous, 5,250 cubic inch main compartment and 7 external pockets, including an oversized one that’s sized for a spotting scope. There’s also a sling-style pocket for your rifle, with straps that hold it vertically against the side of your pack.
We really liked the drop-down shelf on the bottom, though. You can use it for packing out a few pounds of meat, but it’s really designed for packing out large quantities. You can do this by removing the pack from the frame and using the frame and shelf as a massive meat pack. If you’re making multiple trips to pack out an elk or a bear, you’ll appreciate needing to make fewer trips.
The Commander is highly adjustable, including shoulder straps that can be set between 17 and 23 inches wide. However, you don’t want to actually wear it while you’re stalking. It’s big, bulky, and the external frame squeaks and clatters when you move it. Use it for packing in and out, but leave it at the campsite while you’re hunting.
Pros
- Large capacity
- Very adjustable
- Sturdy, rugged design
Cons
- Large and noisy
This backpack is ideal for long hunts or large game.

- 4,900 cubic inch main compartment
- 8 external pockets
- Adjustable shoulder strap width
- Kryptek camo design
- External rifle and bow pocket
- Removable, 680 cubic inch day pack
The Slumberjack Bounty 2.0 is a beefy, internal frame backpack with a large, 4,900 cubic inch main compartment. It features 8 external pockets, including a hydration-compatible pocket for your camel pack. There’s also a sling style pocket on the back, which is designed for securely carrying your rifle, bow, or crossbow.
But the main attraction on the Bounty 2.0 is the modular, removable day pack. Normally, it mounts on the back of the main pack. However, when you remove it, you’ve got yourself a 680 cubic inch backpack that’s enough for water, snacks, and emergency supplies. This is ideal if you need to pack a bunch of gear into a campsite, but only want to carry the essentials on your hunt.
The shoulder straps on this pack are adjustable from 17 ½ to 21 inches in width, and the frame is built to keep the majority of the weight on your hips, where it belongs. While the Bounty 2.0 is expensive, you get what you’re paying for.
Pros
- Versatile, modular design
- Large capacity
- Adjustable and comfortable
Cons

- 2,700 cubic inch main compartment
- 3 external pockets
- Available in Mossy Oak or Realtree camo
- External rifle and bow pocket
- Quiver holders on both sides

The ALPS OutdoorZ Pursuit is an internal frame pack with a 2,700 cubic inch main compartment. This isn’t enormous, but it’s still big enough to carry a weekend’s worth of clothes and supplies. It features 3 external pockets, as well as a hydration sleeve that’s sized for a small, 500 ml Nalgene bottle.
It’s comfortable to wear, with an aluminum frame that distributes the weight evenly across your hips. A drop down sling style pocket supports a bow or a rifle with equal ease. However, this pack is primarily designed for bowhunters; it has quiver holders on both the right and left sides.
A blaze orange rain cover is built into the bottom of the pack. Pull it out, wrap it over the top, and you’re protected from the weather. You’ll want to try the Traverse on immediately, though, because it’s not as adjustable as some other backpacks.

- 12 external pockets
- Available in 6 different colors
- 2 full-frame pistol pockets
- Internal hydration pouch
- MOLLE webbing exterior
- Waterproof PVC liner
The Explorer Tactical Gun Concealment Backpack isn’t technically a hunting backpack. But it’s a rugged, tactical backpack with a lot of the features that hunters are looking for. To begin with, it has several organizer sleeves on the inside. While these are designed for a laptop, iPad, and phone, they’re equally useful for sorting out your skinning knife and first aid supplies. It also includes a hydration pouch that fits a 3-liter bladder.
Convenient storage is also the name of the game on the outside of this pack. It features a whopping 12 external pockets, with space for your magazine, optics, GPS, and other gear. There are even two built-in pistol holsters on the waist band, so you can use it as a bug out bag.
You don’t want to load the Explorer Tactical with too much, though. It has narrow shoulder straps with little padding, so they tend to dig in if you’re hauling a heavy load. That said, the price is very reasonable.
Pros
- Rugged design
- Organized internal storage
- Affordable
Cons
- Poor weight distribution
This is a heavy duty tactical backpack that’s also useful for hunting.

- 4,500 cubic inch main compartment
- 4 external pockets
- Adjustable shoulder strap width
- Available in three different camo patterns
- External rifle pocket
- Expandable 1,200 cubic inch pocket
- Internal hydration pouch
- Built-in blaze orange rain cover
The ALPS OutdoorZ Traverse is a roomy, internal frame pack with thick, comfy padding over the entire back, shoulders, and hip strap. It features a hydration pouch and port that’s compatible with most commercial bladders and also has 4 external pockets for easy access to your gear. Two of these are sized for a spotting scope, so you can carry it on either side. There’s also a drop-down sling style rifle pouch for carrying your gun.
This pack is designed with an expandable extra pocket for packing out meat. Simply open the zipper, and you’ll have an extra 1,200 cubic inches of space. It also has a built-in rain orange rain fly, which pulls easily out of a small pouch and extends over the top of your bag. The strap fittings squeak while you’re walking, though, so you’ll want to leave it in camp if you’re trying to stalk anything.

- Durable construction
- Comfortable and adjustable
- Plenty of capacity
Cons
- Noisy
This backpack will keep you hydrated and well supplied through an extended hunting trip.

- Frameless design with nylon shell
- Weighs 2 pounds, 5 ounces
- 1,900 cubic inch main compartment
- 800 cubic inch lower fanny pack compartment
- 5 external pockets
- Adjustable shoulder harness
- Realtree Edge camo pattern
- MOLLE straps on the back
The ALPS OutdoorZ Big Bear features a unique, modular design. It’s a complete, 2,700 cubic inch day pack, but the main compartment can be easily removed, leaving you with a lightweight, 800 cubic inch fanny pack that’s big enough to carry a few basics while you’re up in a tree stand or sitting in a blind. If you want more storage, you can attach an extra pouch to the rear MOLLE straps.
This pack also has 5 external pockets. In theory, this should give you easy access to your gear, but in practice, the hip pockets are located too far back for convenience. The shoulder harness is very comfortable and can be adjusted to fit virtually anyone. And the Big Bear is affordable, so you can save some money for the rest of your kit.
Pros
- Modular design
- Durable
- Comfortable and adjustable
- Affordable
Cons
- Inconvenient pocket placement
This backpack is as comfortable as they get.
7. Eberlestock X2

- 1,800 cubic inch main compartment
- 4 external pockets
- Built-in meat shelf
- Available in 5 colors
- MOLLE webbing on the back
The Eberlestock X2 is an internal frame day pack that’s perfectly sized for short to average sized people. It has limited adjustment options, though, so if you’re anywhere north of six feet tall, you’re better off with a bigger pack.
That said, this is an awesome little pack. It’s waterproof right out of the box, and features 4 external pockets for easy access to your magazine, spotting scope, or water bottle. And if you need extra capacity, you can add MOLLE pouches to the front webbing.
The X2 features a collapsible meat shelf, so you’re not limited to the 1,800 cubic inch main compartment when it comes time to pack out.
Pros
- Waterproof
- Comfortable

Cons
- Limited adjustment options
This is a relatively small pack that’s perfect for a day hunt.

This day pack also has organizers in one of the small front pockets, with a cell phone pouch, and smaller sleeves for keys, a multi-tool, snacks, and so on. The whole pack weighs less than 2 pounds and comes very reasonably priced. The stitching on the straps is fairly lightweight, but it’s still a good bargain for the low price.

It features 5 external pockets for stowing extra supplies and also includes a built-in rain fly to keep all your gear dry. It also has a removable rifle pouch, which can be positioned on either side of the backpack for ambidextrous use.
One thing we liked about this pack was that it includes a 2-liter hydration bladder with a long drinking tube. The bladder is removable and reversible for easy cleaning. We also appreciated the twill lining, which allows you to remove your gear quietly. The only thing we didn’t like was the fact that there’s no hanging strap on the Killshot, so some tree stand hunters may prefer a different option.
Pros
- Durable design
- Versatile and adjustable
- Very quiet
Cons
- No hanging strap
If you need a full-sized pack for stalking game, this is a good choice.

The shell on this backpack is made from Badlands’ proprietary KXO-32 fabric, which is waterproof and durable. At 3 pounds, 15 ounces, it’s very light, and it has thick foam padding on the back to eliminate pressure points and distribute weight more evenly. This backpack is very comfortable, with a fat hip strap and heavily padded shoulder straps. Bottom Line
With this many options available, it’s important to focus on what your exact needs are. For example, if you’re going on a quick morning hunt in a deer stand, you’ll want to wear the best hunting day pack, because it’s lightweight. On the other hand, if you’re out for a full weekend, you’re going to want a bigger pack that can carry more supplies.
But even on a short trip, you’re going to want to be comfortable, which means you need a good fit. Since you’re shopping online, it’s important to try on your backpack as soon as it arrives in the mail. Load it up with some gear to simulate the weight you’ll actually be carrying, and adjust it until you’re as comfortable as possible.
Most packs will adjust to fit most people, but why risk ruining your hunting trip when you can ensure a good fit with 5 minutes of testing? Also, don’t forget to pair it with the best tactical hiking boots to make your hunt even more comfortable.
We hope our hunting backpack reviews were helpful. We certainly enjoyed putting them together!
