scuba diving lead weight and belts

Few sports present as many natural challenges as scuba diving. You’re going deep underwater, swimming around in an environment where human beings were never meant to survive. You’ve got to bring your own air, and strap flippers to your feet to propel yourself around. And if that’s not enough, you’re even battling your own natural buoyancy.

To help you out, we’ve decided to find the best diving weight belt. We’re looking for a rig that fastens securely, so it stays put even when your hands are occupied with a spear gun or an underwater camera. We’re also looking for a rig that allows you to ditch weight quickly, in the event of an emergency.

Beyond that, we’re looking for durability and quality of construction. And because everyone loves a bargain, we’ll also be considering value.

So which scuba diving weight belt is the best? We’ll let you be the judge.

Features

  • Available colors: Black, Blue, Lime, Yellow
  • Durable 2" long nylon webbing
  • 60" long, but you can cut to custom size.
  • Great for making weight belts and tie downs
  • Durable plastic buckle included

The Scuba Choice 60″ Long 2″ Webbing Weight Belt is an inexpensive belt that can be outfitted with a standard weight kit.

Key Features

  • Nylon belt with plastic buckle
  • 2” wide by 60” long
  • Available in 4 colors

We chose the Scuba Choice 60″ Long 2″ Webbing Weight Belt as a baseline to show you the bare minimum for a weight belt. It’s exactly as described — a 2-inch wide nylon belt that’s 60 inches long. It’s available in four colors: yellow, blue, lime green, and black. The first three colors are all very bright and high visibility, which is a good safety feature when you’re underwater. That said, you’re going to need to add a weight kit if you’re actually going to use this belt for ballast.

So why not just buy a random belt off the rack at your local big box store?

It’s simple. This belt doesn’t include any ferrous metals, so it won’t rust in a saltwater environment. It also has a more secure buckle than you’ll find on a standard belt, so it will support all of your weights without popping loose at a critical moment.

Pros

  • High visibility
  • Secure buckle
  • Very inexpensive

Cons

  • It’s just a belt

This belt is available in 4 bright colors for visibility.

Features

  • Low-cost and efficient rubber weight belt
  • Horizontal ribs to prevent unwated motion
  • Cam-lock buckle constructed from glass-filled nylon
  • 20lb Weight Capacity
  • 54" Long, 2" wide

The Riffe Rubber Weight Belt is tough and flexible.

Key Features

  • Rubber belt with glass-filled nylon buckle
  • 2” wide by 54” long
  • Horizontal ribs for secure positioning

Like our last selection the Riffe Rubber Weight Belt is just a belt, not a complete kit. But unlike the last selection, you’re getting a little bit more than just a plain nylon strap. Instead, you’re getting an exceptionally durable rubber belt, which can stand up to a lot more abuse. And because it’s made of rubber, not fabric, you can trim it to length without leaving a frayed end.

Another nice feature of the Riffe belt is the buckle, which is designed to open quickly with one hand. If it gets snagged on something, or if you need to drop your weights quickly for some other reason, this can literally be a life saving feature. It also features a ribbed back, which keeps it from slipping on your wetsuit. All of that being said, you’ll still need to buy some weights and weight stops to complete your kit.

Pros

  • Very durable
  • Can be trimmed to fit any waist
  • Easy-open buckle for quick ditching

Cons

  • It’s just a belt

This belt can be popped open quickly if you need to ditch your belt in an emergency.

Title Seal Supplies ltd Scuba Diving 6 Pocket Yellow Large Weight Belts

The Seal Supplies 6 Pocket Weight Belt is well designed and affordable.

Key Features

  • Polypropylene belt with stainless steel buckle
  • 2” wide by 62” long
  • 6 black and yellow weight pouches

The Seal Supplies 6 Pocket Weight Belt is a 2-inch polypropylene belt that looks like nylon at first glance but is more rugged. It measures 62 inches long, and has 6 high-visibility black and yellow pouches stitched into the webbing. The good news? You don’t need any weight stops to keep them in place. The bad news? You can’t remove the pouches, so if your waist is smaller than about 34 inches you won’t be able to cinch the belt tight.

That said, if your waist is large enough, this is a high quality choice that comes at an impressively low price. You also won’t need to carry any extra weight when you get out of the water — the pockets have porous bottoms that allow them to drain quickly.

Pros

  • High visibility
  • Durable
  • Weight pouches drain quickly
  • Affordable

Cons

  • Limited sizing

If you have at least a 34-inch waist, this is a quality weight belt.

Features

  • 4 pocket weight belt with adjustable Stainless Steel buckle
  • Heavy Duty Nylon zippered pockets (max weight 5lbs each pocket)
  • Small hole PVC mesh for drainage
  • Weights are not included
  • Pocket length: 22″, Waist: up to 30″

The Scuba Max Nylon Zippered Weight Belt is available in four sizes, to fit just about any diver.

Key Features

  • Nylon belt with stainless steel buckle
  • 2” wide in 30”, 34”, 40” and 45” lengths
  • Available with 4, 5, 6, or 7 pouches

The Scuba Max Nylon Zippered Weight Belt is a simple black nylon weight belt that comes in four different sizes. The smallest has 4 pouches and is sized for a 30-inch waist, while the largest has 7 pouches, and is designed for waists that measure 45 inches and up.

Like the Seal Supplies belt, the pouches on the Scuba Max are porous and drain quickly when you get out of the water. It’s very reasonably priced, but the belt itself isn’t very thick. Not only is this a durability problem, but it can bite into your hips if it’s not positioned perfectly.

If you’re an experienced diver who’s looking to upgrade their kit, you’ll prefer a sturdier design. What you’re getting here is basically a starter belt, good enough to get the job done without breaking the bank.

Pros

  • Available in multiple sizes
  • Weight pouches drain quickly
  • Inexpensive

Cons

  • Flimsy construction

This weight belt is a great value for the price.

Features

  • Patented comfort design
  • Easy to adjust weight pocket position
  • Each pocket holds up to 5 lbs. of solid or shot weight
  • Unused pockets Velcro down flat and streamlined
  • (Up to 30 lbs.) 28" - 58" waist

The XS Scuba Eight Pocket Weight Belt has a quick release buckle for easy ditching.

Key Features

  • Nylon belt with nylon buckle
  • 2” wide by 54” long
  • Comes with weight stops and 4, 6, or 8 pouches
  • Available in 3 colors

The XS Scuba Eight Pocket Weight Belt is slightly mis-named. While it’s available with 8 pouches, smaller divers can save money by ordering the 6 or 4 pouch versions. Unlike a lot of complete kits, this one uses removable pouches. If you need 3, 5, or 7 pouches, there’s no need to carry the empty one around. This belt also utilizes traditional weight stops, which allows you to position the belts wherever is most comfortable for you.

The Eight Pocket Weight Belt is available in high visibility yellow or blue, as well as a basic black. The belt itself is crafted from thick webbing, which is comfortable and durable. And the buckle is designed to open easily with one hand, so you can release it quickly in an emergency. This belt is a bit pricey but well worth the money.

Pros

  • High visibility
  • Durable
  • Removable pouches
  • Easy to adjust for comfort
  • Easy-open buckle for quick ditching

Cons

  • Pricey

This is the most easily adjustable weight belt we’ve looked at.

The Seal Diving Products Scuba Weight Harness features D-rings for mounting additional gear.

Key Features

  • Padded nylon harness with D-rings
  • Weight belt with front and rear pockets
  • Removable pockets
  • Available in 3 sizes

The Seal Diving Products Scuba Weight Harness isn’t just a belt, it’s a complete harness. This takes some of the weight off your hips when you’re out of the water. When you’re in the water, the D-rings function as attach points for extra gear like a spearfishing gun, and a pair of bright red stripes on the shoulder straps give you plenty of visibility.

The weight pockets themselves are distributed around your waist, with 2 on the front and 2 on the back. This makes for exceptional balance and trim, allowing you to rotate 360 degrees in the water with ease. If you have an emergency and need to drop some weight, the pockets can be easily released with one hand.

This is an expensive piece of equipment, but it’s the best on the market.

Pros

  • High visibility
  • Rugged and comfortable
  • Extra mounting points
  • Well balanced
  • Quick release pockets for emergencies

Cons

  • Pricey

This rugged, comfortable harness is an upgrade over just about any other weight kit.

Features

  • Model Number: WB2105
  • The package length is 39.624 centimeters
  • The package height is 2.286 centimeters
  • The package width is 18.796 centimeters

The Innovative Scuba Concepts Pocket Weight Belt is a quick and dirty starter kit that will get you in the water on a budget.

Key Features

  • Nylon belt with stainless steel buckle
  • 2” wide by 38” long
  • Available with 4 or 5 pockets

The Innovative Scuba Concepts Pocket Weight Belt is a 2-inch wide nylon belt that comes with either 4 or 5 pouches depending on which version you choose. The stainless steel buckle is secure and reliable, even if you’re going through some rough surf.

The pockets themselves have a high visibility blue band around the bottom for safety, and are also easy to load, with a single, full-length zipper that runs along the top of all the pockets. A mesh design ensures that they drain quickly, so you won’t be carrying any extra water weight when you climb into your boat.

This belt is a great value for the price, but taller divers should take care. It’s only 38 inches long.

Pros

  • High visibility
  • Mesh pockets drain quickly
  • Inexpensive

Cons

  • Not long enough for larger divers

This reliable belt is very reasonably priced.

Bottom Line

Whether you need weights for scuba diving or a free diving weight belt, the principle remains the same: you want to achieve optimal buoyancy. What this means is that you’ll have neutral buoyancy at a depth of 15 feet, while wearing a wetsuit and — if you’re scuba diving — while wearing empty tanks.

So how much weight do you need? This depends on many factors, but it largely depends on your weight and your body mass index (BMI). The higher your BMI, the more fat you’re likely carrying. And the more fat you’re carrying, the more you’re going to float. There’s a rule of thumb that says you should carry about 10 percent of your body weight in diving weights, but you can find a more accurate, scientific calculation here.

We hope our diving weight belt reviews have been helpful. At the very least, we hope you’re a more educated customer now than you were when we began.
